What does it mean to be dead in transgressions and sins?

Answered in 1 source

Being dead in transgressions and sins means being spiritually disconnected from God due to sin.

Ephesians 2:1 states that we were dead in our transgressions and sins, indicating a state of spiritual death that results from sin. This condition signifies a complete inability to respond to God apart from His intervention. Every human being inherits this sinful nature due to the fall of Adam, as described in Romans 5:12. It is only through God's sovereign grace that we are revitalized and made alive in Christ. Sin brings spiritual death, whilst God's grace brings spiritual life and the ability to believe.
