What does it mean to be delivered from captivity?

Answered in 1 source

Being delivered from captivity means being freed from the bondage of sin through Christ's redemptive work.

In Luke 4:18, Christ states that He was sent to preach deliverance to the captives. This deliverance signifies liberation from sin's hold on our lives. As Christians, we recognize our state of captivity, which is a result of our total depravity; we are enslaved to sin and cannot free ourselves. The good news is that Christ brings complete freedom—not merely the possibility of escape, but actual deliverance. The gospel declares that through His work on the cross, we are set free from the guilt and power of sin, and this freedom enables us to live righteously before God. This liberation also highlights the sovereignty of God in salvation, demonstrating that it is He who initiates and accomplishes our rescue.
