What does it mean to be made righteous as a believer in Christ?

Answered in 1 source

Believers are declared righteous through faith in Christ, receiving His righteousness as a free gift from God.

Being made righteous as a believer means having Christ's righteousness imputed to us through faith, rather than through our works. This is articulated in 2 Corinthians 5:21, where it states that He who knew no sin was made to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Righteousness involves not only the forgiveness of sins but also the reception of a new nature, enabling believers to walk in holiness and obedience. This is a transformation wrought by God's grace, where the believer, recognizing their inability to save themselves, relies wholly on Christ's merits and righteousness, which are freely given.
