What does it mean to be overwhelmed by sin?

Answered in 1 source

Being overwhelmed by sin refers to the feeling of despair and helplessness that results from our sinful nature, which can only be addressed through God's grace.

To be overwhelmed by sin is to experience the deep distress and alienation that comes from our rebellion against God. This spiritual state is characterized by an inability to save oneself, leading to despair. Psalm 124 vividly portrays this concept by describing how enemies rise against us, akin to waters that would engulf our very souls. Such imagery resonates with the reality of our sinful condition, which apart from God's intervention, leaves us vulnerable to judgment and wrath. However, God's grace, seen through Christ's atoning work, provides us with deliverance from this overwhelming sin, assuring us that we can escape the depths of our misery when we place our faith in Him.
