What does it mean to be poor and needy according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

Being poor and needy in the biblical sense means recognizing one's spiritual poverty and dependence on God.

In Scripture, those described as poor and needy are often those who realize their utter dependence on God for salvation and sustenance. In Isaiah 41:17, it speaks of the poor and needy who seek water but find none, illustrating a desperation for spiritual nourishment that only God can provide. This acknowledgment of neediness is not a reflection of physical poverty but rather a spiritual condition that leads individuals to seek Christ, who promises to satisfy their thirst. It is through recognizing our poverty of spirit that we see the sufficiency of Christ's grace.
