What does it mean to be poor and needy in a spiritual sense?

Answered in 1 source

Being spiritually poor and needy means recognizing our absolute dependence on God for salvation.

In the context of Scripture, the spiritually poor and needy are those who have been made aware of their dire condition before God. As the psalmist expresses, God promises to arise for those who sigh in need. This spiritual poverty is essential for salvation, as it is those who recognize their lack of righteousness that will be filled (Matthew 5:3). God first shows us our neediness so that we might seek Him and His provision through Christ. Acknowledging our poor state before God allows us to receive His grace and mercy fully.
