What does it mean to be powerless in spiritual terms?

Answered in 1 source

Being powerless spiritually means being unable to save oneself or even respond to God without divine intervention (Romans 5:6).

To be spiritually powerless is to recognize our complete inability to effect change in our sinful condition. Romans 5:6 says that at just the right time, when we were powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. This impotence signifies that without the work of the Holy Spirit, we cannot perceive our need for salvation or reach out to Christ on our own. The Reformed understanding emphasizes that salvation is entirely initiated by God, as we are unable to contribute anything to our justification; our response must come from the regenerated heart created by the Holy Spirit.
