What does it mean to be spiritually bankrupt?

Answered in 3 sources

Being spiritually bankrupt means recognizing one’s inability to achieve righteousness or merit God’s favor on one's own.

Spiritual bankruptcy is the acknowledgment that apart from Christ, individuals have no righteousness to present to God. This concept emphasizes that all humans are sinners and cannot attain God's standards through their actions. Romans 3:10-12 states, 'There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.' Only those who see themselves as spiritually impoverished can truly appreciate the grace offered by Jesus. He came to heal the brokenhearted and preach the gospel to the poor (Luke 4:18), which encompasses those who are painfully aware of their spiritual neediness.
