What does it mean to be totally depraved?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity means that every aspect of humanity is affected by sin, rendering us incapable of saving ourselves.

The doctrine of total depravity teaches that all humans are affected by sin in every part of their being—mind, will, and emotions. Ephesians 2:1 states, 'And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,' illustrating that apart from God's intervening grace, individuals cannot turn to Him. This means that left to our own devices, we are spiritually dead and unable to recognize or respond to God without His life-giving power. This understanding emphasizes the necessity of divine grace for salvation, as faith itself is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9).
