What does it mean to be totally depraved in Christian theology?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity means that every aspect of humanity is affected by sin, making it impossible to come to God without divine grace.

Total depravity emphasizes that sin affects all of man's faculties, including the mind, will, and emotions. According to Scripture, as expressed in Romans 3:10-12, 'There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.' This doctrine underlines the necessity of divine intervention; without God's enabling grace, one cannot respond positively to the Gospel. Paul’s call to 'come to Christ' highlights that it is only through acknowledging one’s depravity and turning to the Savior that one can be saved. This truth affirms the absolute need for the initiative of God in the salvation process.
