What does it mean to do righteousness according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

To do righteousness means to believe in and trust Christ as the sole source of our righteousness.

Doing righteousness, as presented in the Scriptures, refers to the act of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus indicates that true righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees, demonstrating how even the most religious efforts are insufficient for gaining access to the kingdom of heaven. The only way a sinner can be made righteous is through faith in Christ, who fulfills the law on behalf of His people. Our actions do not earn righteousness; rather, it is received through faith—a fundamental aspect of being united with Christ in His obedience. Thus, doing righteousness is intrinsically connected to faith in and reliance upon Jesus.
