What does it mean to have assurance in Christ?

Answered in 1 source

Assurance in Christ is grounded in His finished work and righteousness, not in our performance.

1 John 5:13 indicates that believers can know they have eternal life. This assurance is built upon the finished work of Christ—'It is finished' (John 19:30)—signifying that all that is necessary for salvation has been accomplished. We find confidence not in our own achievements but in His righteousness credited to us. Assurance flows from understanding that our standing before God relies solely on Christ's merits, a truth that strengthens and comforts the believer’s heart.
