What does it mean to live by the Spirit and not the flesh?

Answered in 1 source

Living by the Spirit means relying on God's grace rather than our sinful nature to guide our actions.

Living by the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5, signifies a radical dependence on God's grace and empowerment rather than succumbing to our fleshly desires. The flesh is characterized by sin and self-indulgence, whereas the life in the Spirit leads to the fruits of righteousness. This shift from flesh to Spirit is pivotal in the life of a believer, as the new man, which is created in Christ, cannot sin and is focused on glorifying God.

Furthermore, living by the Spirit necessitates a conscious effort to reject the inclinations of the flesh and to embrace a life marked by love, humility, and service. As we grow in our relationship with Christ, the Spirit equips us to put down sinful tendencies and to cultivate a character that mirrors Christ. It is through this daily reliance on the Spirit that Christians are empowered to live as witnesses of the gospel, reflecting the light of Christ to the world.
