What does Jesus mean by the coming of the Advocate?

Answered in 1 source

The Advocate refers to the Holy Spirit, who empowers and comforts believers after Jesus’ departure.

In John 16:7, Jesus indicates that His departure is necessary for the arrival of the Advocate, or the Holy Spirit. This is not merely a transition but a significant moment in salvation history. The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost fulfills Christ's promise and empowers the Church in ways His physical presence could not. The Spirit's indwelling brings comfort, guidance, and conviction to believers, enabling them to live out their faith and proclaim the Gospel effectively. Thus, the Advocate’s presence is vital for sustaining and empowering Christians as they face the challenges of life and continue the work of Christ in the world.
