What does Jesus mean by 'you cannot serve God and mammon'?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus means that one cannot prioritize both God and wealth; loyalty to one will lead to disdain for the other (Matthew 6:24).

Matthew 6:24 states, 'No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.' This highlights the impossibility of divided allegiance. Christ calls out the futility of trying to attain both worldly wealth (mammon) and spiritual devotion. Those who attempt to serve both will ultimately find their hearts swayed toward earthly riches, leading to spiritual blindness and estrangement from God. This teaching challenges us to reflect on our own loyalties and the potential for materialism to undermine our faith.
