What does substitution mean in the context of Christ's death?

Answered in 1 source

Substitution means that Christ died as a representative for His elect, taking their place and bearing their sins.

In theological terms, substitution refers to the doctrine that Jesus Christ died in the place of His people, taking upon Himself the penalty for their sins. This concept is woven throughout Scripture, emphasizing that the death of Christ was not just an act of love but a vital act of atonement whereby He paid the full price for His people’s sins (Romans 3:25). In 1 Peter 2:24, we learn that He 'bore our sins in His body on the tree,' highlighting the perfect exchange where the righteous One suffered for the unrighteous. Consequently, those for whom Christ died will never face the penalty they deserve, as justice has been satisfied through His sacrificial death.
