What does the Bible say about being a slave to sin?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible teaches that all humans are born as slaves to sin and are in need of salvation through Jesus Christ to become free.

In Romans 6:16-17, the Apostle Paul explains that we are all servants to whatever we choose to obey, whether it leads to sin and death or to righteousness. Before experiencing God's grace, we are described as 'slaves of sin,' meaning that our lives and actions were dominated by sin's power. This servitude is a state of bondage that ultimately results in spiritual death, as seen in Romans 6:23, where it is said that 'the wages of sin is death.' Therefore, the nature of humanity is illustrated as being in a deep dependence on sin until rescued by Christ.
