What does the Bible say about being possessed by sin?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible describes all humans as being possessed by sin, which makes them spiritually dead and in rebellion against God.

The account in Mark 5 illustrates the reality of humanity's condition under sin. Just as the Gadarene was possessed by an unclean spirit that no man could bind, so too are we all in bondage to sin. Scripture teaches that we are dead in trespasses and sins, as noted in Ephesians 2:1-3. Our sinful nature is such that we cannot restrain ourselves, and attempts to do so only illustrate our helplessness, as the chains broke to no effect against the Gadarene's strength. This highlights the seriousness of our condition, where sin enrages within us, leading us to a life of spiritual death and rebellion against God.
