What does the Bible say about blessings and curses?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible reveals that blessings and curses are often misunderstood; what appears as a blessing for the wicked may be a curse, while true blessings for the elect may seem like curses.

In Scripture, blessings and curses are deeply tied to God's sovereignty and providence. As stated in Proverbs 12:21, 'There shall no evil happen to the just, but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.' This emphasizes that God's providential acts may appear as judgments against the wicked while serving as blessings for His elect. The account of Isaac's blessing of Jacob and Esau illustrates this principle; Isaac, in faith, blessed both sons, but what appeared to be a blessing for Esau was, in essence, a curse due to God's rejection of him. In contrast, Jacob, who seemed to be cursed in life through hardship, was truly blessed by God, for all his experiences were working for his eternal good (Genesis 42:36).
