What does the Bible say about causing others to stumble?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible warns against causing others to stumble, stating that it is a serious offense against God.

The Scriptures teach that putting stumbling blocks in the way of others’ faith is a grave sin. Jesus declares, 'Woe unto him through whom offenses come' (Luke 17:1). To cause even one of these little ones to stumble is so serious that it would be better for a millstone to be hung around one’s neck and cast into the sea. This admonition emphasizes the responsibility Christians have to live lives that do not misrepresent Christ and His teachings. When believers conduct themselves in ways that contradict their professed faith, they risk becoming stumbling blocks for others, leading them away from the truth of the Gospel.

Consistency in behavior is vital for the witness of the Church. Paul warns in Romans 2:24 that the behavior of the Jews caused the name of God to be blasphemed among the Gentiles. As believers, it is imperative to reflect the character of Christ in our actions, for the world closely examines our lives. Therefore, we must strive to adorn the doctrine of Christ and not give anyone an excuse to dismiss the faith due to our inconsistencies.
