What does the Bible say about chastening from God?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible teaches that God's chastening is a loving discipline for His children, aimed at their growth in holiness (Hebrews 12:6-11).

In Hebrews 12, it is evident that God's chastening is not merely punitive but is rooted in His love for His children. The author highlights that just as earthly parents discipline their children for their benefit, so God disciplines us for our ultimate good. This chastening is a sign of sonship; if we do not experience it, we are to be concerned about our standing as His children (Hebrews 12:7). Unlike human discipline, which may arise from frustration or a desire to simply enforce rules, God's discipline is consistently aimed at our growth and conformity to the image of Christ. It seeks to produce a harvest of righteousness in us (Hebrews 12:11).
