What does the Bible say about civil authority?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible teaches that all authority is ordained by God, and Christians are to be subject to civil authorities as part of His divine order.

In Romans 13, the Apostle Paul explains the importance of civil authority and our responsibilities toward it. He asserts that all governing powers are established by God—there is no authority except from Him. This means that Christians must be subject to the higher powers and show respect and obedience to those in authority, recognizing that they serve as ministers of God for good. Resisting authority is equated with resisting God, which brings upon oneself judgment. Therefore, it is essential for Christians to honor and obey civil authorities while remaining mindful of their ultimate accountability to God.
