What does the Bible say about debt to God?

Answered in 1 source

Believers are debtors to God, owing Him gratitude and obedience for His grace.

The Bible teaches that believers are in a unique relationship with God, where they are considered debtors because of the grace they have received. In Romans 8:12, Paul states, 'Therefore, brethren, we are debtors...' This debt is not one of oppression but a sense of obligation to express gratitude for the grace of salvation. It is through grace that we have been freed from the weight of sin, and now we owe a debt of love and service to God. This is highlighted further in 2 Thessalonians 1:3, where Paul expresses that he feels bound to thank God for the believers, which emphasizes the gratitude that a debtor feels towards the one who has given them grace.
