What does the Bible say about duty and service to God?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that true service to God stems from love rather than obligation, as Christ has fulfilled the law for us.

In Romans 7:18, the Apostle Paul expresses the struggle within us to do good, illustrating that in our flesh there dwells no good thing. This highlights the idea that our duty to God is not merely a legal obligation but a response to His grace. Many misunderstand this duty by viewing it as an enslaving contract imposed by our Redeemer. However, scripture shows us that Christ has fulfilled all legal requirements of the law for His chosen people, as mentioned in Galatians 3:13. Hence, we serve out of the freedom that comes from knowing our debts are canceled and we no longer live under the law's condemnation (Romans 8:1). This understanding liberates us to serve God joyfully and willingly rather than out of fear or obligation.
