What does the Bible say about evil thoughts and temptations?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that evil thoughts arise from our sinful nature, but God gives us the grace to resist them.

Evil thoughts are an inevitable consequence of our sinful nature, and as John Newton indicates, they arise as naturally as steam from a boiling kettle. This reflects the biblical understanding that our hearts are inclined toward sin. Yet, when we become aware of these thoughts and dislike them, it signifies the grace of God at work within us. This awareness enables us to detest sin and seek the help of our great Physician, Jesus Christ, who can heal us from our sinful condition.

Moreover, Scripture emphasizes that while we will face temptations during our earthly lives, the presence of temptation is often a sign of spiritual awakening. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, we learn that God provides a way out of temptation, assuring us that His grace allows us to confront and resist the pull of evil thoughts. It is through prayer and reliance on God's strength that we can stand firm against these internal battles.
