What does the Bible say about examining oneself before the Lord's Table?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible instructs believers to examine themselves before partaking in the Lord's Table to avoid eating and drinking judgment on themselves.

In 1 Corinthians 11:28-29, the Apostle Paul instructs, 'Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.' This examination is a call for self-reflection on one’s faith and conduct in light of the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. It serves to ensure that participants approach the Lord's Table with a heart that truly recognizes and repents of their sin, understanding the significance of Christ's atoning work. Failure to do so can lead to serious consequences, including weakness, illness, or even death, as noted in verse 30.
