What does the Bible say about faith and presumption?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible distinguishes between faith, which is act of trust in God's promises, and presumption, which is a prideful assumption that God will act without seeking Him.

In Daniel chapter 9, Daniel exemplifies the difference between faith and presumption. He does not merely accept the prophecy regarding Israel's deliverance and passively wait for it to occur. Instead, Daniel actively seeks God in prayer and supplication, demonstrating genuine faith. Presumption, on the other hand, is rooted in pride and is characterized by a false confidence that God will fulfill His promises without the need for earnest seeking. As illustrated in Deuteronomy 18:20, presuming upon God can lead to serious consequences, and it is a warning against a misguided confidence that lacks humility and dependence on God's grace.
