What does the Bible say about God afflicting us?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that God afflicts us as a loving Father disciplines His children for their ultimate good (Hebrews 12:6).

The Scriptures indicate that affliction is purposeful and not arbitrary. As noted in Hebrews 12:6, 'For whom the Lord loves, He chastens and scourges every son whom He receives.' This discipline is akin to parental correction, intended to impart growth and holiness. God’s afflictions serve as a means of divine love aimed at refining our character and making us more like Him. Psalm 119:75 also affirms that 'I know, O Lord, that your laws are righteous, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me,' showing that His afflictions are related to His faithfulness and righteousness towards His people.
