What does the Bible say about God's forgiveness and chastening?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that God's forgiveness does not negate His chastening; He can forgive sins while also administering discipline for our spiritual growth.

The scriptures clearly illustrate the dual nature of God's dealing with His people. While God forgives sin, as seen in 2 Samuel 12:13-14 where David is told his sin is forgiven, He still chastens His people due to the reality of sin's consequences. The distinction lies in God's roles as both Judge and moral Ruler. God's forgiveness pertains to our eternal standing before Him, but His chastening reflects His fatherly discipline meant to correct and guide us in our earthly walk. As Psalm 103:10 reassures, He does not deal with us as our sins deserve, yet He trains us through hardships to align our lives with His holiness.
