What does the Bible say about good deeds?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that good deeds should be done for God's glory, not for human praise.

In Matthew 6:1, Jesus warns that good deeds, referred to as alms, should not be done to be seen by men. While it's natural that good deeds may be noticed by others, the motivation must stem from love for Christ and a desire to glorify Him. Paul also highlights this in 1 Thessalonians 1:3, where he commends the believers for their works of faith and labor of love. When good deeds are motivated by self-seeking praise or the applause of men, they cease to be good works in God's sight, as stated in Matthew 7:22-23, where actions done for personal gain are labeled 'works of iniquity.' Thus, the essence of a good work lies in its motive, which should always be for the glory of God.
