What does the Bible say about having fellowship with God?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible states that true fellowship with God is based on being in the light and having a true relationship with Him, as indicated in 1 John 1:6-7.

In 1 John 1:6-7, the Apostle John clarifies that if we say we have fellowship with God yet walk in darkness, we deceive ourselves. Fellowship with God is not merely a claim made by believers, but it must reflect a genuine relationship and alignment with His truth. True believers, empowered by the Spirit, recognize their sinful nature yet rejoice in their justification through Christ. They understand that their ability to have fellowship with God comes from being cleansed from sin through His sacrifice. Any claim to fellowship that ignores God's holiness or one's own sinful nature is an empty assertion.
