What does the Bible say about Holy Spirit conviction?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible reveals that the Holy Spirit brings conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment to the world, particularly in John 16:8.

The Holy Spirit, referred to as the Comforter in John 16:5-11, is essential for genuine conviction in the believer's life. According to verse 8, the Holy Spirit's role includes reproving or overwhelmingly convincing the world of three critical truths: sin, righteousness, and judgment. This conviction is not merely an intellectual acknowledgment but an intense realization of one's nature and standing before God, which acts as the foundational step towards salvation.

The natural man lacks understanding of these spiritual convictions and remains in darkness regarding his true state of sinfulness and the righteousness that is only found in Christ. Thus, the Holy Spirit’s conviction is vital for a person to recognize their need for Christ and His redemptive work. Through His work, one comes to see that apart from Christ, they are lost in their sin, in desperate need of His righteousness, and aware of the impending judgment for their unrepentant state.
