What does the Bible say about idols?

Answered in 9 sources

The Bible teaches that idols are lifeless and incapable of action, reflecting the spiritual blindness of their makers.

In Psalm 115:3-8, we see a clear distinction between the living God and man-made idols, which are simply silver and gold fashioned by human hands. These idols have physical features like mouths and ears but lack the ability to perform any function or convey truth. The psalmist highlights that those who create such idols become like them—blind and deaf to the true nature of God. In Psalm 135:18, this truth is reinforced as those who trust in these idols are marginalized and spiritually dead. This serves as a warning against the folly of creating a god from our own imagination instead of worshipping the sovereign God who reigns in heaven.
