What does the Bible say about idols in worship?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible commands us to remove idols from our lives to worship God rightly.

In Scripture, idols represent anything that competes with our devotion to God. Jacob, when commanded by God to return to Bethel, told his household to put away foreign gods (Genesis 35:2-4). This call to purity in worship emphasizes that true service and worship require a faith devoid of idols. James 4:4 warns against friendship with the world as it leads to enmity with God. Therefore, for true worship, believers must examine their lives for any idols that distract from their devotion to God and repent to prioritize Him above all.
