What does the Bible say about Jesus' words, 'It is finished'?

Answered in 1 source

In John 19:30, Jesus declares 'It is finished,' signifying the completion of Old Testament prophecies, types, and God's redemptive work.

The phrase 'It is finished' uttered by Jesus on the cross encapsulates the fulfillment of all Old Testament prophecies concerning His sufferings as well as the purpose of His sacrificial death. Throughout His ministry, Christ fulfilled numerous prophecies, many dating back centuries, and at that moment on the cross, He declared the completion of those prophecies including His thirst foretold in Psalm 69:21. His death marked the end of all sacrificial systems established under the law as they pointed to His one sufficient sacrifice for sin, fulfilling the types established in the Old Testament, such as the Passover lamb.
