What does the Bible say about man's religious efforts?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible teaches that man's religious efforts are often vain and not pleasing to God unless they spring from a true heart of faith.

In Zechariah 7, God expresses through the prophet that the fasts and religious ceremonies of Israel were not acceptable to Him because they were performed for selfish reasons rather than out of love for God. God tells them that their religious exercises, while outwardly pious, lacked true spiritual intention. This mirrors the condition of humanity in general, as all are born in sin and inclined towards self-righteousness rather than genuine worship. Therefore, while many engage in religious practices, such as fasting or attending services, these efforts are devoid of meaning if not rooted in a sincere relationship with God. The Lord desires that His people act justly, show mercy, and love their neighbors, rather than simply perform empty rituals.
