What does the Bible say about obedience to government?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that Christians should obey civil authorities as long as those laws do not contradict God’s commands.

In Matthew 22:15-22, Jesus teaches that we have obligations to both civil authorities and God. When asked whether it is lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, He replies, 'Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.' This response highlights the principle that while we may not agree with every governmental requirement, we are still called to obey the laws of the land in matters that do not contradict God’s Word. Therefore, Christians are to respect and submit to civil authorities in temporal matters, provided they do not infringe upon the commands of Scripture.
