What does the Bible say about our depravity?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that we are utterly depraved and in need of God's grace for salvation.

In Ezekiel 16, we see a stark description of humanity’s condition outside of God’s grace. Verses 2-6 depict our state as one of utter helplessness and pollution, illustrating that we are born with a sinful nature, akin to a child cast out in the field, unwashed and uncared for. This imagery makes it clear that without God’s initiative and grace, we cannot change our plight. Our depravity is foundational to understanding the gospel, as it highlights our inability to please God or seek Him on our own. Scripture confirms this through various passages, stressing that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Recognizing our depravity sets the stage for the longing and need we have for divine redemption.
