What does the Bible say about our sin debt?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that sin is a debt we owe to God, which we cannot pay ourselves.

According to Scripture, our sin is likened to a debt that we cannot pay. In Matthew 18:23-35, Jesus illustrates this through the parable of a king who forgives his servant's immense debt. The servant, representing all of humanity, has no ability to settle his obligations, reflecting our state before God. Romans 6:23 states, 'For the wages of sin is death,' underscoring that the consequence of our debts is severe. God demands perfect righteousness, which we cannot achieve on our own. Our inability to pay highlights the necessity of looking to a Surety—Jesus Christ—who satisfies the debt for us (Hebrews 7:22).
