What does the Bible say about paying taxes?

Answered in 4 sources

The Bible teaches that we should render to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's, affirming the authority of government under God's sovereignty.

In Mark 12:13-17, when questioned by the Pharisees and Herodians about the lawfulness of paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus responded by acknowledging the necessity of rendering taxes to the governing authorities. His statement, 'Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's,' underscores not only the legitimacy of civil authority but also the supremacy of divine authority over all matters. This passage illustrates that while Christians are obliged to respect and fulfill their civic duties, they must also maintain a clear distinction regarding their ultimate allegiance to God. Paying taxes acknowledges God's sovereignty over the institutions He has established, including government.
