What does the Bible say about peace and division?

Answered in 5 sources

The Bible teaches that while Christ is the Prince of Peace, He also declared that He did not come to bring peace on earth, but a sword, indicating division among those who follow Him.

In Matthew 10:34, Jesus states, 'Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.' This verse highlights a real paradox in Christ's ministry. On one hand, He is known as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) and the one who brings peace between God and humanity (Romans 5:1). Yet, on the other hand, His entrance into the world and the gospel's proclamation often brings conflict and division, especially among those who hold differing beliefs. Jesus warns His disciples not to expect the worldly peace and tranquility that many hoped for, but rather to be prepared for division, even within families, as a result of their allegiance to Him. This division indicates the spiritual warfare that accompanies true faith.
