What does the Bible say about proving discipleship?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that true discipleship is evidenced by continuing in faith and obedience to Christ's teachings.

In John 8:31-32, Jesus emphasizes the importance of continuing in His word as the proof of true discipleship. He states, 'If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed.' This illustrates that genuine faith is not a one-time event, but an ongoing commitment to live out the teachings of Christ and to maintain a relationship with Him. The Apostle Paul similarly highlights the need for persistence in faith when he writes in Colossians 1:22-23 about being presented 'holy and unblameable' if we continue in faith, grounded and settled.

The concept of perseverance in the faith is further underscored in Hebrews 3:6 and 1 John 2:19. In these passages, we see that a true disciple will endure in their commitment and will not turn away from the gospel. The 'if' statements found in these scriptures serve as reminders that enduring faith is essential to affirming one's relationship with Christ and ultimately, salvation. Therefore, true discipleship is proven through a continuous and active faith in Jesus.
