What does the Bible say about putting off the old self?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches us in Ephesians 4:22-24 to put off the old self, which is corrupt, and to put on the new self created in the likeness of God.

In Ephesians 4:22-24, the Apostle Paul instructs believers to put off their old self, which belongs to the former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires. This action is not simply about moral improvement; it signifies a profound transformation that occurs when a person is regenerated by the Holy Spirit. The old self represents our pre-conversion state, characterized by ignorance, hardness of heart, and a futility of mind attributable to our sinful nature. Thus, to live the Christian life authentically, we must acknowledge the reality of our new identity in Christ and actively choose to reflect that identity in our behavior.

Furthermore, putting off the old self is inseparable from putting on the new self, which is created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. This renewal involves a continuous process where the believer actively engages with the Word of God and allows the Holy Spirit to transform their minds and hearts. As we grow in this understanding, we will increasingly reflect the character of Christ in our lives, thus fulfilling our calling as His followers.
