What does the Bible say about self-righteous religion?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible condemns self-righteous religion as contemptible to God, highlighting that true acceptance comes only through faith in Christ, not through works.

The Bible states emphatically that self-righteous, legalistic religion is utterly contemptible in the sight of God. As noted in Isaiah 1:10-18, God expresses His disdain for empty rituals that are devoid of genuine faith in Him. He is not pleased with the multitude of sacrifices or the following of religious forms when the heart is far from Him. Instead, God desires true worship that comes from faith and reliance on His Son, Jesus Christ, who is our righteousness. Without acknowledging we are helpless sinners needing Christ's atoning sacrifice, our religious acts only serve to deceive us and are a stench to God.
