What does the Bible say about self-righteousness and sin?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness can keep us from Christ, while our sins cannot; Christ came to save sinners.

The Bible clearly states that self-righteousness is a significant barrier to salvation. As noted in the sermon, there is no sin that can keep anyone from coming to Christ, because Christ came to save sinners. However, reliance on one’s own righteousness is what will ultimately keep a person from the Kingdom of God. The parable of the Pharisee and the publican illustrates this truth. The Pharisee, boasting of his righteousness, was rejected, while the publican, acknowledging his sinfulness, was justified by God. Thus, it is crucial for believers to recognize that our greatest enemy is not our sins but our self-righteousness, which would lead us to trust in ourselves rather than in Christ for salvation.
