What does the Bible say about shepherds and hirelings?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible contrasts true shepherds, who care for the sheep, with hirelings, who act for personal gain and do not genuinely care for the sheep.

In John 10:1-15, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. True shepherds are devoted to their flock and prioritize their spiritual welfare. In contrast, hirelings are those who serve for their own profit and are quickly willing to abandon the sheep when danger arises. Throughout Scripture, we see this distinction emphasized; hirelings are often characterized by selfishness and indifference to the spiritual needs of the congregation, while true shepherds demonstrate sacrificial love and care.
