What does the Bible say about sorrow and joy?

Answered in 4 sources

The Bible teaches that our sorrow can be turned into joy, especially through the death of Christ (John 16:20).

In John 16:20, Jesus tells His disciples that they will weep and lament, but their sorrow will be turned into joy. This paradox of sorrow leading to joy primarily points to the transformative power of Christ's death and resurrection. Even though the disciples felt deep sorrow over the crucifixion, that very event would be the foundation of their joy, as it accomplished salvation and reconciliation with God. The sorrow of loss would ultimately give way to the joy of salvation, as believers understand that in Christ, death leads to eternal life.
