What does the Bible say about sorrow and joy for believers?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that believers may experience sorrow in this world, but their joy is rooted in the hope of seeing Christ again.

In John 16:20, Jesus states that believers will weep and lament while the world rejoices, indicating a dichotomy between the responses of the world and His followers. The sorrow of believers, however, is temporary, as Christ promises that their sorrow will turn into joy when they see Him again (John 16:22). This joy is not simply the absence of sorrow but a deeper rejoicing rooted in the relationship and hope believers have in Christ, who assures them of eternal life and presence with Him. The apostle Paul also reflects this theme, encouraging believers that current sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to them (Romans 8:18).
