What does the Bible say about spiritual maturity?

Answered in 8 sources

The Bible emphasizes that spiritual maturity involves doing everything in the name of the Lord Jesus and for the glory of God (Colossians 3:17, 1 Corinthians 10:30).

Spiritual maturity, as taught in Scripture, is fundamentally about aligning our actions and words with the honor of Jesus Christ. Colossians 3:17 instructs believers to do 'all in the name of the Lord Jesus,' highlighting that every endeavor should reflect His authority and purpose. Similarly, 1 Corinthians 10:30 reminds us that our actions should ultimately be for God's glory. This focus on glorifying God is crucial because without it, even our sincerest acts can become empty and devoid of divine power.

In historic Reformed theology, we recognize that mere religious activity, without a heart aligned to glorify God, amounts to little. Many might demonstrate religious talent or articulate doctrine well, yet the true measure of spiritual maturity is found in the motivation behind our actions – whether they aim to exalt Christ and fulfill His purposes. This foundation in God's glory should permeate our gifts, personalities, and service within the church and the world.
