What does the Bible say about spiritual vigilance?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible warns against spiritual slothfulness, urging believers to open their eyes and hear the voice of the Shepherd to avoid poverty of spirit.

Proverbs 20:13 admonishes believers to 'love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty.' This verse highlights the importance of spiritual vigilance, as slothfulness can lead to a loss of spiritual vitality and comfort. In Ephesians 5:14-17, we are called to wake from our slumber and be careful to walk wisely, as our adversary seeks to devour the inattentive.

Spiritual sloth manifests itself as a lack of engagement in God's Word, prayer, and the proclamation of the Gospel. The believer, awakened by the Holy Spirit, should be vigilant against these tendencies, which can lead to feelings of spiritual dullness and disconnection from God. A conscience that is attuned to the Word of God will recognize the need for constant spiritual wakefulness to grow in grace and knowledge of the Savior, ultimately leading to greater spiritual nourishment, as promised by Christ, the Bread of Life.
